Beginner choirs

For all 6th graders

The Beginner Choirs are 2 choirs at Downing! The Beginner Treble and the Beginner Tenor/Bass learn, work, and perform separately in order to understand their voices in a stress-free, fun environment. We use games and physical activity to develop their skills and singing technique and to learn how to read music. The Beginners perform in 4 concerts a year and are judged in Spring festival competitions. The Beginners regularly receive Superior and Best In Class awards.


VARSITY Tenor/Bass

For 7th & 8th Graders

The Varsity Tenor/Bass Choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade tenors and basses. In this UIL choir, we learn to work with changing voices in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. We use games and physical activity to develop their skills and singing technique. The Varsity Tenor/Bass perform in 5 concerts a year and are judged in the Texas UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation as well as Spring festival competitions. The Varsity Tenor/Bass regularly receive Sweepstakes, Superior, and Best In Class awards.


Downing A Cappella Groups

For Students who have been singing at least a year

This is an extra-curricular, audition-only group that performs several times a year. The groups perform contemporary A Cappella music and learn advanced singing techniques and harmonization skills. ​​


Varsity Chamber

for 7th & 8th Graders

The Varsity Chamber Choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade treble voices. It is one of our most competitive UIL choirs. Here students expand on their advanced skills and singing technique. The choir learns and performs a variety of music styles, and is consistently challenged with high level performance pieces. Varsity Chamber performs in 5 concerts a year and is judged in the Texas UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation as well as Spring festival competitions. They regularly receive Sweepstakes, Superior, Best In Class, and Best in Show.


Cantori Treble

for 7th & 8th Graders

The Cantori Treble Choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade treble voices. In this UIL Choir, students learn about the different voice types and how to develop their skills and singing technique. The choir learns and performs a variety of music styles. The Cantori Treble Choir performs in 5 concerts a year and is judged in the Texas UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation as well as Spring festival competitions. The Cantori Treble Choir regularly received Sweepstakes, Superior, Best In Class, and Best in Show.
